Web based applications are becoming key business development areas where core business functions are being handled with a browser window rather than a desktop application. The design principals are the same, however the benefits are immense. To have all data centralised yet have staff, clients and customers in geographically distant places is possible through the use of web applications.
A growing trend is the diversification of what operating system people use, whether it be a Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac or a Linux desktop. A well designed and developed web application can run happily on pretty much anything. This gives probably the biggest benefit - flexibility.
